There was no logic, that Spock could deduce, for the Captain's decision to send he and McCoy down alone, to an uninhabited planet, to perform a survey of the local flora. It had been visited by Starfleet before, and found to have a mild climate, an atmosphere compatible with life, and only moderately dangerous wildlife. It was stable, geologically, and had only moderate amounts of useful ores and minerals. It was possible that the plant life would be more useful, and as Chief Science Officer, Spock's presence made some sense. The need for the Chief Medical Officer to accompany him, was quite outside his grasp.
The Captain was, however, the Captain and his orders were to be followed. Not without question, of course, but without question in McCoy's presence.
Odds were, the actual mission was for them to take their bickering off the Enterprise, or, even better, learn to get along. If Spock had entertained the possibility, he would have wished Jim luck in his ambitious endeavor.
To that end, they appeared in a shimmer of silver from the transporter beam, along with their equipment for the next two planetary days. "Would you prefer to set up the shelter, or begin cataloging, Doctor?"
